Legal Battle Erupts: Family Of Herbert Wigwe Sues Business Partner Aig-Imoukhuede
Legal Battle Erupts: Family Of Herbert Wigwe Sues Business Partner Aig-ImoukhuedeChristian Chukwuka Wigwe, a cousin of the late Herbert Wigwe, former Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank, has submitted an affidavit to the Lagos High Court Probate Registry. He accuses Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, a close friend and business partner of Herbert, of overstepping his authority by taking control of the deceased’s assets and his children.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Christian alleges that Aig-Imoukhuede has assumed informal guardianship over Herbert’s children—David, Hannah, and Great—despite this role traditionally belonging to their grandfather, Pastor Shyngle Wigwe. The affidavit, dated October 7, 2024, expresses concerns that Aig-Imoukhuede’s management has marginalized Pastor Shyngle, undermining his position as the head of the Wigwe family.
Christian argues that, according to African customs, the grandfather should have a say in the welfare of his grandchildren. He emphasized in the filing, “The father of the deceased, Pastor Shyngle Wigwe, should be consulted regarding his grandchildren’s upbringing.”
The affidavit also raises issues regarding Aig-Imoukhuede’s oversight of Herbert’s estate and the lack of transparency in financial decisions. Christian points out that Aig-Imoukhuede has not provided adequate updates on the use of Herbert’s wealth, particularly regarding the care of the children and Herbert’s dependent parents.
He noted, “Aig-Imoukhuede’s control has alienated key family members, including Pastor Shyngle, who should be integral in the children’s lives.”
While acknowledging Aig-Imoukhuede’s support for Herbert’s parents and the children, Christian criticized the absence of formal accounting, which has led to family concerns about estate management. The dispute has heightened tensions within the family, with some members aligning with Aig-Imoukhuede in hopes of gaining benefits from his control.
This legal conflict follows reports of Herbert Wigwe’s parents filing a caveat at the Probate Registry, contesting aspects of their late son’s will. Although Pastor Shyngle has denied contesting the estate, the situation has highlighted ongoing power struggles regarding Herbert Wigwe’s legacy. Herbert, who passed away earlier this year, was instrumental in expanding Access Bank’s footprint across Africa through strategic acquisitions during his leadership.
