Legal Battle Unfolds As Individual Takes MTN, Glo, Airtel, And More To Court Over NIN-Related Restrictions
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently instructed telecommunications companies to block mobile lines of individuals who have not linked their National Identification Numbers (NIN). In response, a legal case has been initiated in the federal high court by a petitioner named Ogungbeje. The defendants in the case include the NCC, Dr. Aminu Mada (CEO of the commission), and MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. Other parties involved are Airtel Networks Nigeria Ltd., Globacom Ltd., and Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Ltd. (EMTS 9 Mobile)……………CONTINUE READING
Ogungbeje asserts that, despite obtaining a court order on February 22nd prohibiting the blocking or deactivation of phone lines until the case is resolved, his and many other Nigerians’ mobile lines were still blocked by the respondents on February 28th. Consequently, he is seeking a declaration that the actions of the respondents in blocking and deactivating phone lines, despite a valid court order, are wrongful and illegal.
The petitioner requests a declaration affirming that the respondents, being entities established by law, are obligated to adhere to the authority of the court and comply with its rulings. He further seeks an order to nullify all directives restricting the phone lines of Nigerians and demands the removal of restrictions on affected individuals’ phone lines. Additionally, Ogungbeje demands N10 billion as punitive damages from the telecommunications companies for the alleged illegal limitations.
Moreover, the petitioner requests a permanent injunction preventing the respondents from taking any further measures against affected individuals related to the case. As of now, no hearing date for the lawsuit has been scheduled.
