Legal Block: Wike Supporter Barred From Acting As Rivers Assembly Speaker
Legal Block: Wike Supporter Barred From Acting As Rivers Assembly Speaker....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
A recent ruling by the Rivers State High Court has temporarily barred Speaker Martin Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers from conducting any activities within the Rivers State House of Assembly. These lawmakers, reportedly allied with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, are currently embroiled in a conflict with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The court injunction, initiated by pro-Fubara Speaker Victor Jumbo and two other assembly members aligned with the governor, also restricts Martin Amaewhule from convening plenary sessions at the assembly premises. Issued by Justice Charles Wali under case number PHC/1512/CS/2024, the order prohibits the defendants from gathering or conducting legislative business at the assembly’s premises or any other location until further notice.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 29th.
Security Measures at Assembly Quarters
In response to heightened tensions, heavily armed policemen have taken control of the entrances to the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt. Approximately thirty officers have blocked the first and second gateways, securing the facility.
This development follows allegations made by the Martin Amaewhule-led assembly, claiming that Governor Fubara intends to demolish the quarters. Governor Fubara, however, has refuted these claims, stating that his recent visit to the facility was routine and aimed at assessing its condition.
Meanwhile, anti-Fubara lawmakers, including some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have maintained a vigil around the estate in response to Amaewhule’s alarm.
