Legal Drama: Afe Babalola’s Firm Seeks Disciplinary Action Against Dele Farotimi

The law firm of Afe Babalola has filed a 90-page petition with the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), seeking the removal of Dele Farotimi from the roll of Nigerian legal practitioners.

The petition, dated December 6, 2024, and signed by Ola Faro, a partner at the firm, alleges that Farotimi violated multiple provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners. Faro, who is also mentioned in Farotimi’s book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, submitted the petition on behalf of the law firm and in his personal capacity.

The document, titled “Petition against Tomilola Titus Farotimi (also known as Dele Farotimi Esq.) for Violations of the Rules of Professional Conduct,” accuses Farotimi of making unfounded allegations of corruption against the Supreme Court, prominent justices, and the chambers of Afe Babalola & Co. The alleged violations span several sections of the Rules of Professional Conduct, including bringing the judiciary into disrepute, engaging in unethical practices, and making defamatory statements.

The petition specifically claims that Farotimi participated in unlawful conduct, including bribing judicial officers and gaining unlawful access to a judge. It also accuses him of knowingly making false statements of law and fact, obstructing justice, and using unprofessional and offensive language against the Supreme Court and its justices.

Faro stated, “He assisted his clients in misconduct and breaches of the law, knowingly engaged in fraudulent practices, and failed to treat fellow lawyers with respect and dignity. His actions have obstructed and adversely affected the administration of justice, while also bringing the legal profession into disrepute.”

The petition further highlights statements in Farotimi’s book that allegedly discredit the Nigerian judiciary and legal profession, subjecting justices, judges, and the Afe Babalola law firm to public ridicule. It asserts that these actions have damaged their reputations and financial standing while undermining the integrity of the legal profession.

The law firm emphasized the importance of the petition in protecting the dignity of the legal profession, upholding judicial integrity, and maintaining professional standards.
