The hearing for the case with the reference CA/KN/EP/GOV/KAN/34/2023 is set for Monday, November 6, 2023, allowing both parties’ legal representatives to prepare for the legal dispute.
The involved parties in the case include Governor Yusuf and his political party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), as well as the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
To provide context, the tribunal invalidated Governor Yusuf’s election on September 20, 2023, by declaring 165,663 of his votes as invalid due to a lack of INEC signatures or stamps.
Initially, INEC had declared him the winner of the March 18 election with 1,019,602 votes, defeating his opponent, Nasiru Gawuna, who secured 890,705 votes.
However, after the deduction of 165,663 votes from his total, his vote count dropped to 853,939, which was more than 30,000 votes less than Gawuna’s figure.
As a result, the tribunal declared the APC candidate as the victor of the governorship election and ordered INEC to revoke Yusuf’s certificate of return and issue a new one to Gawuna. Governor Yusuf and the NNPP have since appealed the tribunal’s decision and are seeking a reversal of the judgment in their favor.
