Legislators Push For Nationwide Prohibition On Sports Betting

This resolution came about following the approval of a motion presented by Rep. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP-Rivers) during the plenary session in Abuja on Thursday.

Earlier reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) highlighted that around 60 million Nigerians, aged between 18 and 40, actively participate in sports betting.

Rep. Nwogu emphasized that lax or neglected regulations surrounding sports betting have given rise to mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and addiction. Furthermore, he pointed out that it has contributed to strained or broken relationships due to deception or theft from friends and family, financial troubles, legal complications, and job losses resulting from excessive losses or debts.

He stressed the need for campaigns aimed at preventing the adverse social consequences of lottery involvement and underage participation.

In response to the motion, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to conduct an extensive nationwide campaign, creating public awareness about the negative impacts of youth engagement in sports betting.

Additionally, the House assigned the Committee on Inter-governmental Affairs to organize a public hearing on the hazardous effects of sports betting in Nigeria. The committee is expected to provide a report within four weeks, paving the way for further legislative action.

According to data from the National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF), over 65 million Nigerians are actively involved in betting, spending an average of 15 dollars daily. The National Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigerians collectively spend an estimated 975 million dollars daily on online sports betting, amounting to about 356 billion dollars annually.
