Greene highlighted the primary goal of the grant, which is to undertake the documentation, conservation, and enhancement of the cultural heritage at the Sukur UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The funding, as emphasized by Greene, will play a crucial role in aiding ICOMOS-Nigeria and its local collaborators in safeguarding the cultural legacy of Sukur. This involves improvements in infrastructure, revitalization of traditional crafts, and the documentation and protection of the Sakun language.
Hannatu Musawa, Nigeria’s Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, expressed concerns regarding the looming threat of insurgency and the immediate dangers posed by global climate change to the Sukur Cultural Landscape.
She elaborated on the project, stating, “The initiative aims to execute a two-year conservation and preservation initiative in the Sukur Cultural Landscape, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its Outstanding Universal Values.
“The project involves the conservation of both tangible and intangible heritage within the Sukur Cultural Landscape. It also seeks to enhance community capacity, fortify local, national, and international connections and networks for the preservation of the site’s Outstanding Universal Values, all while reinforcing the resilience of the Sukur community in the face of insurgency and climate change.
