The President also extended congratulations to President-elect Joseph Boakai, acknowledging his victory and urging him to unify the nation and capitalize on the widespread support expressed through the electoral process to provide effective governance for the people of Liberia.
President Tinubu praised President George Weah for displaying exceptional leadership by conceding the election, thereby preventing any potential socio-political crisis.
The President commended President Weah for his remarkable demonstration of democratic sportsmanship, especially in the current West African context, where democracy faces threats from actors seeking to undermine the people’s will.
“I commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship.
He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa. He has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected,” stated the President.
President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the people of Liberia for peacefully exercising their rights and encouraged them to steadfastly promote peace and democracy.
It is worth noting that Liberian President and African football legend George Weah had earlier conceded defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai.
The announced results indicated that the opposition leader was leading the polls with nearly 51 per cent of the votes in Liberia. However, Weah acknowledged that he could not overcome Boakai’s lead.
