In a statement released on Friday, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful condemned the proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja, describing them as part of a last-ditch effort by the government to falsely associate Kanu with the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Powerful urged the international community to pay close attention, describing the trial as one riddled with fabricated narratives and media manipulation.

He emphasized that the process before Justice James Omotosho was politically driven and aimed solely at discrediting Kanu and the broader self-determination movement.

“Thursday, June 19, 2025, marked a turning point in a case long sustained by deceit, media propaganda, fake evidence, and a deliberate campaign to criminalize the right to self-determination,” he stated.

Following the conclusion of cross-examinations, the prosecution closed its case. The defence, led by Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), has indicated plans to file a No-Case Submission, arguing that the prosecution failed to provide any credible evidence tying Kanu to any crime.

Justice Omotosho adjourned the case until July 18, 2025, for the adoption of final written addresses.

Powerful declared the day’s proceedings a significant blow to the government’s case, accusing it of judicial manipulation.

“What played out in court was not just a legal setback for the state—it was a full-blown exposure of the government’s reckless abuse of the judiciary,” he asserted.

He further criticized the performance of the final prosecution witness, known as PW5-EEE, believed to be an intelligence officer, claiming the witness was evasive, contradictory, and unprepared during cross-examination.

Powerful slammed the attempt to link Kanu to the #EndSARS protests as desperate and absurd. According to PW5-EEE, the government claimed Kanu incited the protests through his broadcasts, now accusing him of masterminding the entire movement.

He also dismissed as baseless the allegations that IPOB was responsible for the deaths of over 200 security personnel in the South-East. Powerful pointed out that the so-called assessment report tying IPOB to violence was only recently produced in June 2025, not during the time of the alleged incidents in 2020. He added that the accompanying autopsy and coroner reports were unsigned and marred by forgeries.

Moreover, Powerful criticized Nigerian media outlets for ignoring crucial revelations made during court proceedings. “Why does the press remain silent when the prosecution’s claims collapse under legal scrutiny, yet rush to publish every accusation by the DSS?” he questioned.

He encouraged Nigerians and the international community to request Certified True Copies of the court records to verify the claims independently.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a peaceful man. He stands accused not of violence, but of challenging a corrupt system and advocating for a marginalized people,” the statement concluded. “The government’s case isn’t just weak—it stands as a monument to institutional deception.”
