In some cases, fraudsters have exploited the compromised accounts to solicit funds from unsuspecting individuals, instructing them to transfer money to specific bank accounts.
Here are some ministers and governors who have been targeted in these hacking incidents:
•Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu: His WhatsApp number was hacked on October 4, 2024. This incident was confirmed by his spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji.
•Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman: His WhatsApp account was compromised on September 27, 2024, with the details disclosed in a statement by Boriowo Folasade, the Director of Press & PR at the Ministry of Education.
•Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh: His WhatsApp account was hacked on September 9, 2024, as reported by his spokesperson, Diana-Mary Nsan.
•Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno: His WhatsApp number was hacked on August 14, 2024, leading to an attempt to defraud several contacts. This was revealed by Ekerete Udoh, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, who stated that the number had been “cloned” by criminal elements.
•Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke: On July 16, 2024, the Osun State Government issued a public alert regarding a security breach of the governor’s official telephone number. Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor’s spokesperson, advised the public to disregard any calls or messages from the hacked number.
•Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu: One of his phone numbers was compromised on February 11, 2024, leading to attempted extortion from unsuspecting individuals. This information was shared by Emmanuel Ogbeche, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, on his Facebook page.
The prevalence of these incidents underscores the necessity for robust cybersecurity measures to protect government officials and the public from falling victim to such scams.
