Logistics Performance Index: Nigeria Ranks 88th Among 141 Countries

Nigeria’s placement in the World Bank Logistics Performance Index (LPI) has shown marginal progress, moving to the 88th position out of 141 countries from its previous 91st in 2022. The LPI serves as a crucial tool for nations to pinpoint trade logistics challenges and opportunities for enhancement.

This index evaluates diverse aspects of logistics performance, encompassing infrastructure quality, customs efficiency, ease of shipping arrangement, logistics service standards, consignment tracking capabilities, and delivery punctuality. High-income countries dominate the top ranks of the 2023 LPI, with Singapore leading the list, followed by several European nations like Finland, Denmark, and Switzerland.

Conversely, lower-middle-income countries occupy the lower positions, often hindered by economic fragility, geographic isolation, or political instability. Despite some improvements in average scores, many of these nations continue to struggle with logistical limitations, which directly affect their overall rankings.

Nigeria specifically scored 1.9 out of 5.0 in the Logistics Performance Score and 2.6 in Customs Score. Its infrastructure, international shipping, logistics competence, tracking and tracing, and timeliness scores ranged from 2.4 to 2.7, highlighting areas where targeted improvements could enhance its logistics sector effectiveness.

The World Bank report underscores the pivotal role of reliable and resilient logistics in supporting international trade, which in turn drives economic growth. Nigeria, like many countries, faces challenges but also opportunities to bolster its logistics capabilities and thereby improve its global competitiveness.
