LP Crisis: Abure Announces Forgiveness For Those Who Wronged The PartyThe National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has called for reconciliation within the party, urging 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other aggrieved members to return to the party fold. Abure made this appeal during an interview with Saturday PUNCH, following months of internal disputes over his leadership and the controversial convention that reinstated him as chairman.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā¶
Abure has faced opposition from several high-ranking party members who criticized his reelection, particularly accusing the Nnewi convention of being exclusive and lacking proper representation. In response, Obi, Otti, and other key stakeholders formed a 29-member caretaker committee in July, headed by former finance minister Nnenadi Usman. This committee was tasked with organizing an expanded election to bring new executives into the party.
Despite the discord, Abure secured a legal victory at the Federal High Court in Abuja, which reaffirmed his position as the legitimate national chairman of the Labour Party. Following the ruling, Abure has been working to restore unity within the party, appealing to disgruntled members to put aside their differences and rejoin the party.
āThere is no more crisis in the party,ā Abure stated. āThe court has confirmed that there is only one leader in LP. If there is a dispute, the only place you can seek redress is the court. It was claimed that our national convention didnāt follow due process, which led people to go to court. INEC also said we didnāt follow due process, but the court ruled that our convention was in line with the partyās constitution, the electoral act, and the constitution of the land. INEC has since complied, and we are now working closely with the commission.ā
Abure went on to extend an olive branch to those who felt aggrieved, saying, āAll those who feel offended should come back to the party. We have forgiven all those who felt they had wronged us. I am not angry. Weāve moved on, and the LP is one big family.ā
Addressing broader issues, Abure expressed concern about the current hardships Nigerians are facing, emphasizing that these challenges cannot be solely attributed to the leadership. He also called for electoral reforms to address the persistent issues in the countryās leadership selection process.
āOur country is at a crossroads,ā Abure said. āNow is the time for sober reflection. The problem is not just with the leadership; it also involves the followership. We need a mindset shift, and the Labour Party must drive the change. Electoral reform is critical if we want leaders with integrity and dignity who can propel the country forward.
