Ekpa, who is the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, was detained alongside four other individuals on charges of incitement to violence and financing terrorism. His arrest was authorized by the Päijät-Häme District Court, with the specific charge being public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.
According to Finnish media outlet Yle, Ekpa is accused of using social media to incite violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, specifically targeting civilians and government authorities. The Finnish Central Criminal Police also confirmed that the other individuals arrested in connection with the case are facing charges related to financing terrorist activities.
Ekpa’s trial has been scheduled for May 2025, extending his time in detention. When questioned about the possibility of Ekpa being granted bail, Laaksonen clarified that Finnish criminal procedure does not include a bail system. “Our procedure is based on, depending on the case, remand or travel bans as coercive measures to limit the freedom of movement of persons suspected of offenses to which such measures apply,” he explained.
