Initially, Presidency sources justified the purchase, citing enhanced security and comfort for the President during official travels. However, the move has provoked widespread outrage among Nigerians, who perceive it as an unnecessary expense and a sign of the government’s disconnect from the populace.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by Muhammed Ishaq, Acting National Publicity Secretary of the PRP, the party lambasted the government for prioritizing the President’s comfort over the welfare of Nigerians, who are grappling with economic hardship and poverty.
The PRP questioned the rationale behind the purchase, particularly given Nigeria’s current economic challenges, and criticized the government for failing to learn from examples in countries like China and the US, where presidential jets have been utilized for significantly longer periods.
Demanding a reconsideration of this expenditure, the PRP called on all well-meaning Nigerians to join in denouncing what they described as reckless spending and to demand better governance from their leaders.
The party emphasized, “The government’s decision to purchase new airplanes for the Presidential fleet reflects their detachment from reality and lack of accountability. They prioritize luxury spending over addressing the economic woes faced by citizens. It is unacceptable given the country’s economic struggles and soaring inflation rates.”
They further urged the government to focus on crucial issues like poverty alleviation, unemployment, and economic growth, emphasizing that responsible governance demands prioritizing national needs over extravagant expenditures.
“We insist that this wasteful expenditure be reconsidered, and instead urge the government to concentrate on delivering concrete benefits to the Nigerian people,” the PRP concluded.
