Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has admitted that he was left “very, very sad” after the club informed him that it was not currently in a position to offer him a new contract.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the Argentina international joined Liverpool from Brighton in June 2023 on a five-year agreement. However, he has watched teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secure improved contracts this year while his own deal remains unchanged.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister opened up about the situation and acknowledged that the decision had disappointed him.

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad,” the midfielder said.

Mac Allister, however, stressed that he remains happy for Szoboszlai and Gravenberch and believes they deserve their new deals. At the same time, he admitted that seeing his teammates receive improved terms had made him disappointed about his own situation.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, the 27-year-old assured Liverpool supporters that his commitment to the club remains unchanged and promised to continue giving his best for the team.

He also revealed that he had opportunities to leave Liverpool during the summer, amid reported interest from other clubs, but decided to remain at Anfield because he believes it is the right place for him.

Mac Allister said he currently has the right mindset to give his full commitment to Liverpool and insisted that supporters have no reason to worry about his dedication.

The midfielder was part of Liverpool’s Premier League-winning squad in the 2024-25 season but described the following campaign as disappointing both personally and collectively. He made 55 appearances last season as Liverpool finished fifth, while manager Arne Slot was subsequently dismissed.

Under new manager Andoni Iraola, Mac Allister initially started the season on the bench against Newcastle before returning to the starting lineup in Liverpool’s next two matches.

Iraola has also played down concerns over the midfielder’s contract situation, making it clear that Mac Allister’s desire to remain at Liverpool is what matters most to him.

The manager praised the Argentine as an important player and said he rates him highly, indicating that the contract uncertainty would not influence his footballing assessment.

Mac Allister has equally expressed optimism about working under Iraola, saying he noticed something special during pre-season and remains enthusiastic about Liverpool’s prospects.

He reiterated his affection for the club and its supporters while expressing his desire to continue contributing to Liverpool’s success despite the disappointment surrounding his contract situation.
