Maduka Okoye Arrives Super Eagles Camp Ahead Of Crucial Madagascar Clash
Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has arrived in Uyo and joined Nigeria’s camp ahead of the team’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying opener against Madagascar on Friday, September 25.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Okoye’s arrival completes head coach Éric Chelle’s 24-man squad for Nigeria’s opening qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The Udinese goalkeeper was the only player in Chelle’s squad who had yet to report to camp before Friday, prompting questions about his delayed arrival ahead of the crucial encounter.
Chelle, however, explained that Okoye had been granted permission to remain with his Italian club after Udinese requested his presence for some club-related activities.
“His club asked me to allow him to take care of some club-related activities, and I agreed. Now, I have to manage the situation,” Chelle told journalists during a press conference in Uyo on Thursday.
Okoye subsequently travelled to Nigeria and linked up with his teammates on Friday morning, making him available for the upcoming qualifying fixtures.
However, his late arrival could affect his chances of starting against Madagascar, with Chelle expected to choose between Stanley Nwabali of Chippa United and Arthur Okonkwo of Charlton Athletic for the opening Group L fixture.
Nigeria will take on Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time.
The Super Eagles will then travel to Guinea-Bissau for their second qualifying fixture on September 29 as they begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON tournament.
