Major Visa Update: New Zealand Releases New Guidelines For Working Holiday Applicants

New Zealand’s immigration authorities have released detailed guidelines outlining the requirements and procedures for foreign nationals seeking to apply for a Working Holiday visa, including rules covering applications, eligibility and possible extensions.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the official New Zealand Immigration guidelines state that all Working Holiday visa applications must be completed online and submitted in English.

Applicants are required to create an account through New Zealand Immigration’s online services before completing their applications, uploading the necessary documents and paying any applicable fees.

One of the key requirements is that applicants must have a valid physical passport when submitting their application. Applications submitted without a valid passport may be declined.

The timing of an application is also important. Applicants can only apply when the Working Holiday visa scheme for their particular country is officially open. Applications submitted before the designated opening date will be automatically deleted, with immigration authorities stating that the measure is intended to help maintain the performance of the online application system.

Applicants have also been advised to select the correct visa category before submitting their applications. Under the rules, an individual can generally receive a Working Holiday visa for New Zealand only once, even if the visa was previously granted but never used.

The guidelines also outline extension opportunities for certain Working Holiday visa holders already in New Zealand.

Canadian citizens who are in the country on a 12-month Working Holiday Visa may apply for a Working Holiday Scheme Subsequent Work Visa, which can allow them to remain in New Zealand for an additional period of up to 11 months.

British citizens currently in New Zealand on a 12-month or longer Working Holiday Visa may also qualify for an extension, allowing them to use the remaining portion of the maximum 36-month period available under the relevant UK scheme.

However, the application process for subsequent Working Holiday visas under the UK and Canadian schemes differs from the initial application process. Such applications cannot be submitted online and must instead be completed using a paper application.

The guidelines further state that Canadian citizens who initially received a 12-month Working Holiday Visa may seek an extension of up to 11 months, potentially allowing them to remain in New Zealand for nearly two years in total.

For eligible UK citizens, the rules provide greater flexibility, with those who entered New Zealand on a 12-month or longer UK Working Holiday Visa able to apply to extend their stay for the remaining period of the 36-month maximum allowed under the scheme.

Prospective applicants have therefore been encouraged to carefully review the requirements for their specific country and ensure that their applications are submitted during the appropriate application period and with all required documentation.
