The peaceful town of Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe, was shaken by a violent family altercation that culminated in an arson attack, destroying both a house and a car.
The incident, which has drawn widespread attention, reached a conclusion at the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court. Knowledge Jani, a 21-year-old resident of Shackleton Mine, received a 4-year prison sentence, with one year suspended, after being convicted of malicious property damage. The event occurred on April 22, 2024, during a heated argument at his father’s home.
Jani accused his father and stepmother of practicing witchcraft, blaming them for his ongoing health problems. Enraged, he smashed the windows of his father’s Nissan Sunny and severely damaged the car before siphoning fuel from the vehicle to set his father’s house ablaze. He then set fire to the already-damaged car.
The fire caused extensive damage, with losses estimated at USD 14,000. Emergency services were able to contain the blaze, but not before the home and car were significantly damaged. Jani was arrested on the spot following a call for help from his father.
The court’s ruling, highly anticipated by the local community and the affected family, resulted in a 4-year sentence for Jani, with one year suspended on the condition that he remains law-abiding. He will serve 3 years in prison.
