He was charged by the Lagos State Government with causing bodily harm that led to her death, but he pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charge.
In her judgment on Monday, November 25, 2024, Justice Oyindamola Ogala ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven the charge of manslaughter. She stated that the evidence provided, including circumstantial evidence, conclusively showed that Akinlabi’s actions led directly to his wife’s death.
Justice Ogala noted that the fatal incident resulted from the violence that occurred during the couple’s argument, which stemmed from a disagreement over the volume of a radio. She further explained that the death, while unintentional, occurred shortly after the altercation, and that the physical evidence, including the vertical scars found on the deceased, supported the prosecution’s case.
The judge acknowledged the defendant’s plea but emphasized the seriousness of the offense. As a result, Akinlabi was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with his sentence beginning from February 3, 2020, the date of his initial incarceration.
