Man Remanded For Allegedly Killing 11-Year-Old BoyA Chief Magistrate’s Court in Enugu East has remanded 47-year-old Anthony Onyeukwu in custody over the alleged murder of his 11-year-old houseboy, Goodluck John.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Commissioner for Gender, Ngozi Enih, explained that the action is part of Enugu State’s ongoing commitment to combat child abuse. Enih further revealed that Onyeukwu’s arrest followed a tip-off received through the ministry’s whistleblower channels, which suggested that Goodluck’s death was a result of abuse within the household.

Onyeukwu is accused of burying Goodluck’s body hastily in Abia State without notifying the authorities, claiming the boy died from an illness at the Park Lane Hospital in Enugu. However, hospital records have contradicted this claim, showing that no admission or death was recorded for the child.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Calista Ifeanyi, presented the case to the court, arguing that Onyeukwu’s actions violate Enugu State’s Revised Criminal Code and highlight the state’s dedication to child protection under the Child’s Rights and Responsibility Law of 2016.

The charge against Onyeukwu, as outlined in the charge sheet (CME/631C/2024), states that he unlawfully killed Goodluck John on October 15, 2024, at his residence in Enugu. The charge is punishable under Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code, CAP 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2004.

The Chief Magistrate ordered Onyeukwu’s remand in the Correctional Centre, Enugu, and adjourned the case to November 20, 2024, awaiting a report from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Justice, Enugu.
