In an exclusive interview with Arewa PUNCH, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, stated that Mohammed is currently undergoing psychiatric assessments at a facility within the hospital’s premises.

Nguroje explained, “When police from the Mayo-Belwa division rescued Abdullahi Mohammed from the pole, they discovered hard drugs in his possession, including green leaves he admitted were Indian hemp.” He added, “During his interaction with the police, he confessed to using Indian hemp and other narcotics, displaying abnormal behavior. Consequently, we deemed it necessary to take him to the psychiatric hospital for a comprehensive medical examination. We are awaiting the medical results before proceeding with further actions.”

On Saturday night, police rescued and detained Mohammed after he insisted on remaining on the electricity pole until President Bola Tinubu resigned. Nguroje described the incident as potentially suicidal and informed Arewa PUNCH that suicide attempts are considered criminal offenses under Nigerian law. “As per our Constitution, attempting to commit suicide is a criminal offense, so we plan to charge him in court,” he stated.

Nguroje emphasized the police’s constitutional duty to protect lives and property, noting that individuals attempting to end their lives must face legal consequences. Last Friday, coinciding with Mayo-Belwa’s market day, Mohammed climbed the pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway, demanding the resignation of the Nigerian President.

Investigations by Arewa PUNCH revealed that the police engaged local residents to help persuade Mohammed to come down, successfully convincing him late Saturday night. Mohammed hails from Gashaka in Taraba State.
