Matawalle’s ₦528 Billion Allocation As Governor Leaves Zamfara With Gratuity Backlog, Claims Government

Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, the Commissioner of Budget and Planning, stated that Matawalle received ₦290 billion in state allocations, ₦133 billion for local governments, and took out a loan of ₦105 billion, yet failed to fulfill gratuity payments to retirees.

Gajam made these remarks during an interview with Arise TV on Thursday. “When we took office, we inherited a government from the current Minister of State for Defence, Matawalle. Over the past four years, they received a significant allocation of ₦290 billion, local government funding of ₦133 billion, and a loan of ₦105 billion, but we are now faced with a backlog in gratuity payments,” he said.

He emphasized that the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal is prioritizing education and is dedicated to improving the state through effective governance.

“I believe we haven’t been doing things correctly and that the previous leadership took governance lightly. It should be treated as a serious responsibility. This is why Governor Dauda Lawal declared a state of emergency in education, allowing us to begin the reconstruction and rehabilitation of over 300 primary schools,” Gajam noted.

He also highlighted the neglect in educational and healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural areas affected by insecurity, where there is a lack of functioning primary healthcare systems.

Furthermore, Gajam assured that Governor Lawal intends to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage for civil servants in the state. However, he cautioned that merely increasing the minimum wage would not resolve the country’s broader economic challenges.

“The moment these committees finish verifying the lists of legitimate individuals, we will address wage issues. While raising minimum wage may help, it will not fully solve the rising cost of living without creating productivity for sustainability,” he added.
