Matawalle’s Empty Treasury Allegations: Gov. Lawal Speaks Out

Lawal noted that while the EFCC had previously alleged ₦70 billion was stolen, he found that figure to be an understatement. “Based on our records, we have discovered that over ₦250 billion was missing,” he said. He described the state he inherited as highly dysfunctional, with the state government account being completely empty.

Additionally, Lawal highlighted that there was a four-month backlog in salary payments and that no Zamfara students had sat for WAEC or NECO exams in three years. He reported that he had to pay ₦1.3 billion for NECO and ₦1.6 billion for WAEC to resolve these issues, allowing students to finally receive their certificates.
