Mbappé Surpasses Messi’s Record At 27 As Real Madrid Edge Roma In Seven-Goal Thriller
Kylian Mbappé made UEFA Champions League history on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, becoming the youngest player to reach 100 appearances in the competition as Real Madrid, Liverpool and Aston Villa recorded victories on an eventful night of European football.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the French forward achieved the milestone at 27 years and 298 days during Real Madrid’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
Mbappé surpassed the previous record held by Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, who reached 100 Champions League appearances at the age of 28 years and 84 days in a match against Roma on September 16, 2015. The achievement also made Mbappé the fifth French player to reach 100 appearances in the prestigious competition.
The Real Madrid forward marked the occasion with an equaliser after Marten de Roon had given Roma the lead in the 20th minute. Donyell Malen subsequently scored twice after the break to put the Italian side 3-1 ahead.
However, Madrid mounted a remarkable late comeback, with Carlos Espí reducing the deficit in the 83rd minute before Endrick restored parity two minutes later. Antonio Rüdiger then completed the turnaround with a dramatic winner in the 90th minute.
Mbappé made his Champions League debut for Monaco in September 2016 as a teenager. He also finished as the competition’s leading scorer last season with 15 goals, including a hat-trick against Olympiacos that was reportedly completed in six minutes and 42 seconds.
Elsewhere, Liverpool bounced back from their 3-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City by securing a convincing 6-3 victory over LASK in Austria.
Bradley Barcola delivered an impressive attacking performance, scoring a hat-trick in what was described as his first goals for Liverpool following his move from Paris Saint-Germain.
Ronald Araújo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Barcola struck twice to give Liverpool a 3-0 advantage at half-time. Jeremie Frimpong extended the lead in the 51st minute, while Robert Ljubičić pulled one back for the Austrian side in the 63rd minute.
Barcola completed his hat-trick three minutes later, and Lewis Koumas added Liverpool’s sixth goal in the 72nd minute. Florian Flecker scored twice in the 74th and 77th minutes, but Liverpool held on to claim their second consecutive Champions League victory.
Aston Villa also enjoyed a commanding night, defeating Fenerbahçe 6-0 at Villa Park. Johan Manzambi opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Nicolas Jackson struck twice in the 31st and 39th minutes to give Villa a comfortable advantage.
Ross Barkley converted a penalty in the 68th minute and added another goal four minutes later. Substitute Tammy Abraham completed the emphatic victory in the 90th minute.
The result followed Villa’s 3-2 away win over Club Brugge in their opening league-phase fixture, giving Unai Emery’s side another valuable three points.
Paris Saint-Germain also claimed an impressive 4-2 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium despite a second-half brace from Erling Haaland.
Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Ousmane Dembélé doubled PSG’s lead two minutes later. Vitinha added a third goal in the 32nd minute to put the visitors firmly in control.
Haaland reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute, but Maghnes Akliouche restored PSG’s three-goal advantage in the 62nd minute. The Norwegian striker scored again in the 75th minute, giving City hope of a comeback, but PSG held on for the win.
The French side missed an opportunity to extend their lead late in the game after Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a 90th-minute penalty taken by Ferran Torres.
In other matches, Feyenoord defeated Como 3-2, Shakhtar Donetsk beat AEK Athens 3-1, Real Betis edged Porto 3-2, and Stuttgart secured a 3-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava. Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, suffered a 1-0 defeat to Bodø/Glimt.
The night delivered a series of dramatic results across Europe, with Mbappé’s historic milestone and Real Madrid’s late comeback among the major talking points.
