Medical Professionals Protest Over Prolonged Kidnapping Of Female Doctor

Dr. Popoola, a nursing mother, was kidnapped along with her husband and nephew from their residence at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna. The doctors have warned of a strike if she is not freed soon.

In Delta State, doctors at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba marched around the hospital, chanting solidarity songs and urging the government to act quickly to secure Dr. Popoola’s release.

Dr. Asore, the National Assistant Secretary of NARD and former President of FMC Asaba Chapter, reported that the national body has made numerous efforts to secure Dr. Popoola’s release, but with no success. He noted that due to the current fragile state of the country following recent protests, they opted for localized protests at hospital premises rather than a nationwide demonstration.

Dr. Kenneth Okolie, President of the FMC Asaba Chapter, criticized the government’s neglect of the security of medical personnel, attributing it to the widespread emigration of doctors. He called on both the federal and Kaduna state governments to act immediately to release Dr. Popoola or face a shutdown of medical services.

Dr. Silva Juliet, the Chapter’s Public Relations Officer, urged the media and the public to support the doctors’ efforts to secure Dr. Popoola’s safe return.

In support, Dr. Omo Ekeneam, representing the MD of FMC Asaba, assured the doctors that the management would collaborate with them to advance their cause.

Dr. Popoola’s husband, whose health was deteriorating, was released on March 7, 2024, after ransom negotiations totaling over N60 million and food supplies. However, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity. There is speculation that her professional skills may be used by the kidnappers, but this remains unconfirmed.
