According to DAILY POST, the students were taken by gunmen on Thursday evening while en route to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu. The abduction occurred around 5:30 PM in the Otukpo area of Benue State, where the students, along with a House Officer, were ambushed.
The State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday morning.
In a statement released by NANS Senate President, Okunomo Henry Adewumi, the organization demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the kidnapped students. NANS also called on security agencies to ensure the safe return of the students.
“This appalling act highlights the increasing insecurity in our country, reminiscent of recent abductions and killings in Ondo State, including the murder of a farmer by herdsmen,” the statement read.
NANS extended its deepest sympathy to the victims and their families and urged the government to take swift and decisive action to address these acts of violence and prevent future incidents. The student body reiterated its commitment to advocating for the safety and welfare of Nigerian students and reminded the government of its responsibilities regarding education and national security.
The statement called for immediate rescue efforts, enhanced security in vulnerable areas of Benue and Ondo States, better intelligence gathering and sharing, and increased protection for schools, medical facilities, and communities. NANS also demanded the prosecution of those responsible for the abductions and their possible collaborators within security forces, educational institutions, and government agencies.
Furthermore, NANS urged the governors of the affected states to collaborate with federal authorities to address the escalating security issues in their regions.
