Messi Set For Emotional Argentina Farewell As Scaloni Hails His Unequalled Legacy

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has admitted that “only nostalgia remains” as captain Lionel Messi prepares to make what is expected to be his final appearance for the national team against Benin in Buenos Aires.

Messi is set to earn his 208th international cap when Argentina face Benin in a farewell friendly at the sold-out Monumental Stadium on Tuesday, with the match scheduled to begin at midnight BST on Wednesday, October 7.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the 39-year-old announced his decision to retire from international football on August 31, several weeks after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat by Spain. Messi said at the time that he felt he had nothing more to give at international level.

However, Scaloni has continued to leave the door open for a possible return should the Argentine superstar reconsider his decision.

The Argentina coach reflected on Messi’s extraordinary influence during a period in which the team enjoyed major successes, including Copa America triumphs and the 2022 World Cup victory.

Scaloni said Messi would leave behind an unmatched legacy and admitted that his presence on the pitch would be difficult to replace.

“Messi leaves behind something unequalled,” Scaloni said, describing the forward’s influence and professionalism as unique.

The manager also praised Messi’s attitude away from match situations, highlighting his discipline, commitment and approach to every game.

According to Scaloni, Messi’s impact extended beyond his performances, with his teammates also benefiting from the example he set through his work ethic and preparation.

Messi is expected to bow out of international football as Argentina’s most-capped player and leading goalscorer, having recorded 125 goals in 207 appearances for the national team before the Benin friendly.

The legendary forward will, however, continue his club career with Inter Miami, where he remains under contract until the end of the 2028 season.

As Argentina prepares to bid farewell to its captain, Scaloni acknowledged that the national team will have to move forward while appreciating the extraordinary era Messi has helped create.
