Mikel Obi spoke in the wake of Nigeria’s latest disappointment—the failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup—which he views as symptomatic of deeper structural issues in the sport. He believes Nigerian football requires a comprehensive overhaul, not just a rotation of personnel.
Reflecting on his long career, the 37-year-old highlighted his unwavering commitment to representing the country.
“One thing I have always done since my early days is fight for my country. I don’t know how many players have done that like I have, from the U17s, U20s, to the senior national team,” Mikel Obi told Arise TV. “Years of sacrifice. I have never once said no to my country.”
He added that he is willing to contribute to the development of the sport, but only in an environment that encourages honesty and genuine reform.
“When I know I can give my opinion and help, I will always be ready. But I will never be part of a system tied to corruption. If we are going to move forward, things must be done properly. You need the right people—people with the same vision—so when players return home to play, there is a supportive environment for them to perform,” he said.
Mikel has already ventured into sports administration. In July 2023, he was appointed Honorary Adviser on Sports in Plateau State by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, providing him an opportunity to contribute to sports planning and grassroots development.
During his playing career, Mikel captained Nigeria to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title, won an Olympic bronze in 2016, led the team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and earned 91 international caps before retiring after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Rising through the U17 and U20 ranks before captaining the senior team, Mikel has become a role model for young Nigerian footballers aspiring to reach the national stage.
