Military Explains Lack Of Action Against Asari-Dokubo – DHQThe Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Thursday that it decided against pursuing former Niger Delta militant leader Mujahid Asari-Dokubo to avoid accusations of acting “undemocratically.” Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, made this statement in Abuja while addressing a recent report about Asari-Dokubo’s purported threat to shoot down a military helicopter that had allegedly been hovering near his residence.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During a press briefing, Buba dismissed Asari-Dokubo’s threat as laughable and challenged him to confront soldiers on the battlefield if he believed he had the courage. He stated, “The claim made by an individual that he can shoot down military helicopters is laughable. We are in a democracy and are professionals. We cannot simply act on someone’s comments without being accused of undemocratic behavior.”
Buba emphasized that the military is not the sole security agency in the country, as other agencies have defined constitutional roles in addressing such matters. He asserted that Asari-Dokubo lacks the capability to carry out his threats, saying, “We will allow the relevant security forces to handle the situation. As for us, we invite him to the battlefield, where we can engage him directly.”
He further explained that the military’s primary focus remains on combating terrorism across various operational theaters. “The enemy we fight are terrorists, regardless of the names they may be called in different regions. In the North-West and North-East, they may be referred to as bandits, but they are all terrorists,” he noted.
Buba reported that the military has made significant progress, having eliminated over 300 terrorist commanders in the last three quarters and diminishing their fighting capabilities. He shared that operations during the week led to the killing of 165 terrorists and the arrest of 238 suspects, as well as the rescue of 188 kidnapped victims.
Additionally, he mentioned the arrest of 35 suspected oil thieves in the South-South region and the prevention of oil theft estimated at N688,125,150. The troops discovered and destroyed various illegal refining sites and recovered substantial amounts of stolen crude oil and refined products.
In terms of arms recovery, Buba reported the seizure of 153 assorted weapons and 2,182 rounds of ammunition, including 81 AK-47 rifles, various other firearms, and significant quantities of military-grade ammunition.
Overall, he stated that the operations have significantly weakened terrorist groups and disrupted their operational capacity.
