Expanding Development Beyond the Niger Delta

The Ministry, now responsible for coordinating and supervising the established Development Commissions across the country, has focused on fast-tracking infrastructure, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability.

Among the most notable accomplishments, the Ministry has successfully completed over 64.9km of roads, installed 102,990 solar streetlights, provided 137.33km of power transmission lines, and constructed several jetties across regions under its mandate.

Infrastructure Development: Roads, Water, and Electrification

Under the Ministry’s efforts, several key road projects were completed, including:

Gberegolor-Ogriagbene Road, Delta State

Okpuala-Iguruta Road Phase I, Imo State

Oron Road, Ovia North East, Edo State

Onuakpaka Link Bridge, Imo State (18.5m Steel Bridge)

Additionally, six major water supply projects with a daily capacity of 150m³ have been implemented to improve access to clean water in rural communities. The Ministry also installed seven new transformers, including a 2.5MVA unit, to enhance electrification and boost economic activity.

Economic Empowerment and Job Creation

The Ministry has taken a proactive approach to job creation, training over 12,216 individuals in vocational and entrepreneurial programs, distributing 165 sewing and grinding machines, and providing 600 women with clean cooking stoves to improve household energy efficiency.

In agriculture, it has distributed 81 mechanical tillers, 32 fish-smoking kilns, and established two agro-processing plants. An additional two mini-plants for rice and palm oil processing are currently under construction in Abia State.

Environmental Protection and Sustainability

The Ministry has completed several environmental projects, including:

Canalization/River Training at Onopa Canal, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State (4km)

Erosion Control at Okayi Amogudu, Abia State

Itigidi Riverbank Protection, Cross River State

Installation of an 80kg Hospital Waste Incinerator in Kaiama, Bayelsa State

Other key initiatives include the construction of new health centers, ICT development programs, and classroom blocks across the Niger Delta.

Challenges and Future Plans

Despite these achievements, the Ministry faces significant funding constraints, with only ₦14.1 billion of the approved ₦35.2 billion budget released so far. This shortfall has hindered the timely execution of projects, particularly in volatile regions like the Niger Delta.

Going forward, the Ministry plans to leverage Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and alternative funding sources such as the 2025 SUKUK Issuance by the Debt Management Office to finance major infrastructure projects.

A Commitment to Regional Development

In closing, Minister Momoh reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to fostering peace, security, and economic growth across all regions under its supervision. He emphasized that the achievements so far are a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to ensure sustainable development and improved livelihoods for all Nigerians.
