The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, emphasized the immense economic potential of cassava in Nigeria, highlighting the various primary products that can be derived from this versatile tuber. Nigeria, being the largest global producer of cassava with an annual output of approximately 34 million tons, is poised to further increase production through the introduction of improved and pest-resistant varieties.
During a recent facility tour of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) in Lagos over the weekend, Minister Nnaji explored different sections of the institute. This included inspecting the cassava processing lines, which yield a variety of primary products, and the paper production unit utilizing biowastes instead of wood, contributing to the fight against deforestation. The tour also covered the metal fabrication center equipped with a diverse range of lathe machines and the examination of bottled palm wine boasting a shelf life of about six months.
Encouraging entrepreneurs and manufacturers to tap into local resources, Minister Nnaji urged them to access necessary raw materials, machinery, and spare parts from FIIRO and other ministry-affiliated agencies. As part of his strategy for the commercialization of Research and Development outcomes, he expressed plans to establish pilot plants for select products to attract and stimulate investor interest.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. (Mrs) Jummai Adamu, the Director-General of FIIRO, provided an overview of the institute’s history, programs, and projects through a detailed slide show. The presentation showcased various institute products, including agro-sacks crafted from banana fiber, cosmetics, and soaps derived from Neem (Dogonyaro) leaves, among other innovative items.
Dr. Adamu reiterated FIIRO’s primary mandate, emphasizing its commitment to accelerating Nigeria’s industrialization by identifying applications for the country’s raw materials and enhancing indigenous production techniques. The collaborative efforts between the government and research institutions like FIIRO aim to harness the economic potential of agricultural products like cassava while fostering sustainable and innovative industrial practices.
