During his appearance before the House Committee on Solid Minerals to discuss the Ministry’s 2024 budget estimate, Alake pointed out that areas rich in solid mineral deposits are plagued by insecurity orchestrated by these powerful individuals.

Alake further emphasized that the government is actively identifying these individuals and will take decisive actions against them. This initiative is part of a broader effort to secure these regions for potential investors interested in contributing to the solid minerals sector in the country.

He stated, “One discovery that we have made is that a lot of these insecurities and banditry associated with this sector are sponsored by illegal miners. These are not your artisan miners. They are not the people who pick gold on the ground. These are heavy and powerful individuals in our country.”

According to Alake, these powerful individuals are Nigerians, not foreigners, and the government is employing both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to address this issue. He highlighted the importance of providing necessities for citizens and acknowledged the government’s responsibility to ensure the safety of those engaged in legal mining activities.

The Minister concluded, “The non-kinetic approach involves giving artisan miners an ultimatum to form cooperatives. Every Nigerian has a right to life and necessities, and if the government cannot provide these necessities, we cannot push them into the bush.” This statement reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges associated with illegal mining and banditry in the country.
