Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye has decided to retract the lawsuit she previously filed against Niger State House of Assembly Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkindaji concerning his proposal to marry off 100 orphans from his constituency. Addressing reporters on Friday, she disclosed that the Ministry of Women Affairs, in conjunction with the state assembly speaker and traditional leaders, is currently conducting an investigation to verify the girls’ ages and ensure compliance with legal marriage requirements.

Kennedy-Ohanenye emphasized that, for the time being, the Ministry’s primary focus will be on empowering girls and others impacted by the prevailing insecurity in the state. This decision comes in the wake of widespread national condemnation following Sarkindaji’s announcement of his intention to arrange marriages for the orphans.

In response to the minister’s initial legal action, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) urged her to withdraw the lawsuit and the petition she had sent to the Inspector General of Police. Chairman of MURIC’s Kano State Chapter, Malam Hassan Indabawa, asserted that the minister’s actions demonstrated a lack of understanding of the cultural and traditional context surrounding such matters in the Muslim North. Indabawa criticized what he perceived as an attempt to vilify Sarkindaji, who he claims had shown genuine concern for the welfare of his constituents.
