Omar Bin Omran, who disappeared at the age of 19 while en route to his vocational school, was located after an astonishing 26 years, revealed Algerian media reports.
Now aged 45, Omar was liberated on Sunday, May 12, from the confines of his captor’s dwelling. A video circulating on social media captures the bewildered expression of the long-missing Omar as he emerged from the basement, concealed beneath a hay-covered floor resembling a sheep pen.
Authorities swiftly apprehended the accused captor, a 61-year-old man who lived alone, as confirmed by the Djelfa Attorney General’s Office.
The breakthrough in the investigation stemmed from a familial dispute over inheritance, when the suspect’s brother hinted at his involvement in the abduction through a social media post, prompting Omar’s family to alert the authorities.
Upon reopening the investigation, the National Gendarmerie meticulously combed through the suspect’s residence until uncovering a concealed trapdoor hidden beneath the hay-strewn floor, leading to Omar’s miraculous discovery, stated prosecutors.
Following his rescue, Omar received medical attention, addressing both physical and psychological needs, while legal proceedings against the unnamed suspect are forthcoming for the egregious offense, declared the attorney general’s office.
Disturbingly, the accused abductor stands accused of perpetrating further atrocities, including the alleged killing of Omar’s faithful canine companion, seen in photographs taken before the young man’s disappearance, according to Algerian news outlets.
Reports indicate that the dog, lingering around the suspect’s premises for a month subsequent to Omar’s vanishing act, met a tragic end, with its lifeless body discovered outside Omar’s family home, presumably poisoned.
Regrettably, Omar’s mother, who steadfastly clung to hope during the agonizing years of her son’s absence, passed away in 2013, revealed his uncle to Algerian media. Despite the prevailing belief among some family members that Omar had perished during the country’s tumultuous civil strife of the 1990s and early 2000s, his mother remained convinced of his survival, her dying plea echoing a poignant plea for relentless pursuit.
Reportedly, Omar recounted to relatives his poignant ordeal, recounting instances where he would catch glimpses of his family members passing by through a window in his captor’s abode, yet unable to vocalize his distress or beckon for help, ensnared as if by an invisible force, as relayed by Algerian news sources.
