Money Laundering: Bank Executives To Face Charges As EFCC Prepares Prosecution

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that it will soon begin prosecuting bank executives implicated in facilitating money laundering activities in Nigeria.

At the 17th annual conference of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede disclosed that the commission is preparing to take legal action against bank executives entangled in corruption. He revealed that investigations have uncovered involvement in money laundering, illegal forex transactions, and unethical trading practices by some bank officials.

Olukoyede urged the CIBN to enhance its regulatory measures to prevent fraud, noting that significant financial crimes often occur within the banking sector. The EFCC has also called on the National Assembly to pass legislation that supports the government’s whistle-blower policy.

Addressing the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference in Lagos, Olukoyede highlighted the need for new laws to ensure whistle-blowers receive protection from law enforcement agencies. He also emphasized the importance of due diligence for lawyers, advising them to thoroughly vet their clients to avoid breaching Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) regulations.

“As legal professionals, we must maintain trust and integrity in our conduct. Compliance with international laws is crucial, but adhering to ethical standards is equally important. It is essential to avoid protecting individuals involved in financial crimes. If you have knowledge of those being sought, you should come forward,” Olukoyede stated. He added that acting correctly will not only help avoid international scrutiny but also uphold the integrity of the legal profession in Nigeria.
