The 27-year-old was among 23 suspects paraded by the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, where SP Ayuba Umma, Zonal Public Relations Officer, disclosed details of the case. According to Umma, the incident began when a report was filed by Jona Jumai, alerting authorities that her sister Ruth, employed as a domestic worker in Ajah, had gone missing in May 2024.

Shortly thereafter, the family received a ransom demand of five million naira from supposed kidnappers using an unfamiliar phone number. A staged photo of Ruth with bound hands and feet was sent to her mother to coerce compliance. Despite managing to raise only N60,000, the family’s efforts to meet the ransom were futile, leading to their eventual arrest in Ikorodu.

Addressing the media, Ruth, hailing from Kaduna State, expressed remorse for her actions, revealing her intention to use the extorted funds to launch her own business. “I regret my actions deeply,” she lamented. Her boyfriend, Gabriel, also shared his perspective, asserting that Ruth initially proposed the idea of feigning illness to solicit money, but later opted for the kidnapping ruse.

The couple’s arrest underscores a troubling trend in financial scams involving staged abductions, prompting a broader investigation by law enforcement into similar incidents across the region.
