Nigeria is currently grappling with a surge in cholera cases, as reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). Since the beginning of 2024 until June 11th, a total of 1,141 suspected cases, including 65 confirmed cases and 30 deaths, have been documented across 96 local government areas in 30 states. Dr. Jide Idris, Director-General of NCDC, emphasized the urgency of the situation, especially as the rainy season heightens the risk of cholera spread. He highlighted a recent outbreak in Lagos State and underscored the collaborative efforts of the National Cholera Technical Working Group. This group, comprising various federal ministries, WHO, UNICEF, and other partners, has been actively supporting affected states with interventions ranging from risk communication to case management and sanitation initiatives.

Cholera, a water and food-borne disease caused by Vibrio Cholerae, thrives in contaminated water and food sources. Dr. Idris pointed out that prevention measures include ensuring access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation practices, and regular handwashing. He urged Nigerians to boil and store water in covered containers before consumption, practice good hygiene, and ensure food is thoroughly cooked.

Additionally, he cautioned against open defecation and improper waste disposal, which can contribute to the spread of the disease. The NCDC continues to monitor and respond to the cholera outbreak nationwide, urging vigilance and adherence to preventive measures among all citizens.
