The incident occurred at No. 40, Taiwo Street, Idi-Araba, Mushin, when the victim, a scrap dealer, unknowingly attempted to cut a metal object, which turned out to be a grenade.
The explosion resulted in the death of the dealer and left three others injured. The injured individuals were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, provided additional details in a statement on Sunday. He explained, “The explosion tragically claimed one life, and three others were injured. The injured are receiving medical attention.”
Hundeyin further clarified that the explosion occurred when the victim was cutting what he believed was a metal item, only to discover it was a grenade. The blast led to his fatal injury.
The spokesperson also revealed that the police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit is collaborating with the Nigerian Army’s Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron, under the 81 Division, to determine the origin of the grenade.
After the explosion, the EOD-CBRN unit arrived at the site, safely removed the remains of the detonated grenade, and recovered two live grenades. These were taken to the Police EOD-CBRN Base Headquarters in Lagos for proper disposal and safety measures.
The area was cordoned off immediately to secure the location and protect the surrounding community. Hundeyin assured the public that steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The cordon of the scene and surrounding areas is in place to facilitate a thorough investigation into the explosion and ensure all necessary actions are taken,” he added.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. He reassured residents of their safety, urging them to remain calm as the explosion site and surrounding areas have been secured. “CP Jimoh urges peace and assures residents of their safety as the area has been rendered safe,” Hundeyin concluded.
