In an official statement released on Thursday, NAFDAC identified the affected batch number as 93529610. The agency raised concerns regarding the presence of 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, a chemical banned in cosmetics due to potential health risks, including reproductive harm, adverse effects on unborn children, and skin irritation or burns.
NAFDAC emphasized that the recalled product, which claims to provide 48-hour protection, is manufactured in Germany and has the Bar Code Number 42299882. The agency urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to be vigilant and ensure that this specific batch of Nivea deodorant is not sold or used.
“The recalled Nivea product contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, a prohibited chemical in cosmetics that can harm the reproductive system, affect the health of unborn children, and cause skin irritation and burns,” the agency stated.
NAFDAC advised anyone in possession of the affected batch to cease sale or use immediately and to submit their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse effects experienced from using regulated products to NAFDAC through various channels, including their email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, the E-reporting platforms available on their website, or the Med-safety application, which can be downloaded on Android and iOS.
