Reports indicate that on Wednesday, the Chadian military conducted an airstrike on Tilma Island in Nigeria’s Lake Chad region, where fishermen were working at the time. Anti-jihadist militia members assisting Nigerian soldiers reported that several fishermen were killed in the attack.
Babakura Kolo, a leader in the anti-jihadist militia, stated that a Chadian fighter jet mistakenly targeted the fishermen, believing them to be Boko Haram militants. “The jet mistook the fishermen for Boko Haram terrorists who attacked a military base inside Chad on Sunday,” Kolo explained.
A Chadian military official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the airstrikes in areas bordering Nigeria and Niger, citing the difficulty of distinguishing between civilians and militants, as Boko Haram fighters often blend in with local fishermen and farmers.
Following the Boko Haram raid on a Chadian military base, which injured many, Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby pledged to pursue the attackers. The government subsequently launched “Operation Haskanite” to eliminate Boko Haram forces.
Eyewitnesses reported that many fishermen from Baga, Doron-Baga, and Duguri were killed in the airstrike, with bodies and injured individuals being taken to a nearby military base. Survivors described the attack as sudden and devastating. One fisherman, Sallau Arzika, recounted the chaos as people fled for safety.
“The fighter jet encircled Tilma before dropping bombs while people ran in all directions for cover,” Arzika said. Another fisherman, Labo Sani from Doron-Baga, shared that two of his friends were killed and another critically injured. “We were fishing and never thought we would be attacked by a fighter jet,” Sani lamented.
Chad has since sought greater international support to combat jihadist violence in the Lake Chad region, where Boko Haram and other militant groups operate from isolated islets. The insurgency, which began in Nigeria in 2009, has since spread across the region, claiming tens of thousands of lives and displacing millions.
