NANS Urges Federal Government To Proclaim National Day Of Mourning For Plateau Tragedy

The horrifying Christmas Eve assault claimed the lives of approximately 195 individuals across 17 villages in the Barkin Ladi, Mangu, and Bokkos Local Government Areas of Plateau State. Over 10,000 people were displaced, seeking refuge in churches, mosques, schools, and private residences.

Prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, united in condemning the attacks, while the United Nations called for a thorough investigation into the incident. In an official statement, NANS Senate President Ekundina Elvis expressed the association’s sadness at the brutal killings, underscoring the absence of concrete steps towards identifying, arresting, and prosecuting the perpetrators.

NANS also raised concerns about the government’s apparent inaction in honoring the memories of the victims and protecting the lives and property of Nigerians. The student body called for a shift from mere condolence visitations to concrete efforts by the government in ensuring the safety of the populace.

In a plea to the ruling class, NANS emphasized the urgency of taking decisive action to safeguard lives and property. The association concluded its statement by calling on the Federal Government to declare a national day of mourning, accompanied by the lowering of the Nigerian flag to half-mast at all levels.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the perpetrators have issued fresh threats of attacks on a community in Plateau State, raising concerns about the potential for further violence. The Middle Belt Forum disclosed that a letter warning of an imminent attack was sent to the Pushit Community in the Mangu Local Government Area. While the police acknowledged awareness of the threat, the situation remains precarious, requiring swift and effective intervention to prevent additional loss of life and ensure the security of the affected region.
