The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to expedite the completion of projects underway on various campuses within the Niger Delta region. In a statement released on Tuesday, NANS Senate President, Comrade Akinteye Afeez, questioned the delay in project completion despite the availability of necessary resources in most cases. Afeez highlighted that instead of functioning as facilities for academic activities, some of these abandoned structures have transformed into hideouts for criminals, undermining the safety and security of students.
The affected universities include the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Delta State University, Ambrose Ali University, Rivers State University, and Abia State University, among others.
Afeez emphasized that the NDDC’s well-intentioned initiatives to enhance the infrastructure of these institutions have unintentionally led to a situation where incomplete structures linger in a state of abandonment, becoming overgrown and susceptible to criminal activities. The student leader highlighted the urgent need for the NDDC to recognize the severity of the situation and take swift action.
He warned that the presence of these incomplete and neglected structures on campuses poses a direct threat to student safety. Afeez urged the NDDC to promptly address the issue by evacuating these abandoned buildings from educational institutions, emphasizing that failure to act urgently could exacerbate security risks on campuses.
In conclusion, NANS called upon the NDDC to prioritize the safety of students and take immediate steps to rectify the situation. The student body stressed the urgency of addressing the issue to ensure that these structures no longer serve as shelters for criminals, thereby safeguarding the well-being of students across the affected campuses.
