Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule has urgently convened a security council meeting to tackle the surge in kidnappings and related security issues within the state. This gathering, held at the Government House, was prompted by escalating concerns over kidnappings and the activities of ethnic militia groups across various regions, including Keffi, Doma, Lafia, Awe, Obi, Keana, Karu, and Nasarawa Local Government Areas.

Expressing deep apprehension, Governor Sule highlighted incidents in villages like Shegye and Katakpa in Toto Local Government Area, along with intra-ethnic conflicts like the recent tragedy in the Udege area. He stressed the need for immediate action following discussions with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and security chiefs in Lagos and Abuja, respectively, particularly focusing on addressing the Bassa militia group’s activities, masquerading as the Bassa Vigilante Group.

Governor Sule unveiled plans to prohibit all single-ethnic vigilante groups in the state, including the Fulani Vigilante Group established since 2009. He outlined a grace period for members of these groups to integrate into existing community vigilante units.

Acknowledging the supportive role of Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe during his absence on the Lesser Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, Governor Sule extended gratitude to all who aided the deputy governor, including traditional leaders and security agencies. He also commended the security forces for their efforts in managing recent farmer-herder conflicts, such as the clash between the Eggon and Tiv communities in Kadarko, which resulted in casualties.
