National Assembly Moves Against Transport Minister, Gives 48 Hours Over Kaduna Derailment

The House of Representatives Committee on Land Transport has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Minister of Transportation, Ahmed Alkali, directing him to appear and explain the circumstances surrounding the recent derailment of a Kaduna-bound train with about 618 passengers on board.

At its investigative hearing, the committee expressed anger over the minister’s failure to honour its invitation.

Committee Chairperson, Blessing Onuh, described Alkali’s absence as disrespectful to the parliament and insensitive to Nigerians awaiting answers.

Quoting a proverb, she said:

“A toad does not run in the daytime for nothing. Some of us left Lagos during this recess just to attend this meeting, yet the Minister is not here. This is a serious matter because our brothers and sisters were affected. We must take it seriously. Therefore, the meeting is suspended, and the Minister must appear within 48 hours.”

Deputy House Spokesman, Phillip Agbese, went further, describing the minister’s absence as proof of incompetence, insisting that his attitude undermines both the parliament and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He said:

“This is a clear sign of inefficiency. The Minister has no regard for Nigerians or the parliament. Since he refuses to honour our summons, we must report him to the President, who has made it clear that no Minister or head of agency should ignore the legislature.”

Another lawmaker, Cyril Hart, condemned Alkali for dishonouring the parliament despite being a former legislator himself.

He said:

“Over 618 Nigerians were almost killed, yet the Minister stayed away. It is disgraceful. For someone who once aspired to be in this parliament, he should understand the importance of respecting it.”

The committee resolved to reconvene only when the Minister of Transportation appears in person to account for the derailment and broader safety concerns in the railway sector.
