The day before, a faction of the party identifying as the South-East caucus gathered and passed a vote of confidence in the embattled National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu. This meeting was not only a direct response to an earlier gathering of the South-East PDP at the Enugu Government House over the weekend but also a precursor to what was to unfold at the BoT meeting.

At the Enugu meeting, attended by the party’s leader in the zone, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, the South-East reiterated its support for Hon. S.K.E Udeh-Okoye as the National Secretary.

Anyanwu, who had been replaced by the South-East PDP after stepping down to contest the Imo State governorship election, is fighting fiercely to reclaim his position. Udeh-Okoye, backed by a favorable Appeal Court ruling, has been staking a claim to the office. However, Anyanwu has filed an appeal and requested a stay of execution on the judgment.

The South-East PDP has also continued to support Chief Ali Odefa, despite his suspension being upheld by the Federal High Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

This struggle for the positions has deeply divided the South-East wing of the party, with factions loyal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and others aligned with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The Enugu meeting was intended to reaffirm the South-East’s position ahead of Wednesday’s BoT meeting. A communiqué was read after the meeting by Odefa.

The gathering included prominent figures like former Senate President and BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, as well as National Assembly members, former governors, and former ministers.

The communiqué stated: “The party also deliberated on internal challenges affecting the party at the national level and efforts to encroach on the South-East’s jurisdiction.

“The meeting addressed the contrived controversies surrounding the position of National Secretary, which is zoned to the South-East.

“In line with the party’s principle of inclusivity, the Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) also discussed the zoning of national and zonal offices in the South-East region.”

The communiqué concluded with resolutions:

  • “That the South-East PDP is united and capable of resolving any internal issues.”
  • “That the South-East PDP rejects any attempts to stir discontent or ignite further conflict in the region.”
