Speaking at the opening of the 5th meeting of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday, the President highlighted that the events over the past 15 years that have disrupted the region’s stability require responsible governance to ensure the safety and prosperity of the people.

In his address, President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, stressed that while military power is essential in addressing security threats, it must be supported by strategies that address their root causes, such as poverty, inequality, and the lack of job opportunities, particularly for the region’s youth.

“Our response to these threats must be multifaceted. Military solutions are vital, but they must be accompanied by efforts that address the underlying issues—poverty, inequality, and the lack of opportunities for our youth,” he said.

Tinubu also reflected on the tragic irony that Africa, home to the world’s youngest population, often sees its youth recruited into destructive ideologies, exacerbating conflicts. He called for a shift in the demographic dividend, turning it into a force for positive change.

“Power’s true essence lies not in its possession but in its application,” the President continued. “While hard power may secure borders, it is soft power—through diplomacy, culture, and shared values—that builds bridges and unites us.”

He also commended the progress made in combating insurgency and noted that global security challenges continue to drain significant resources, with the global military spending a historic $2.4 trillion in 2023, with no signs of abating.

The meeting, hosted by the Yobe State government, brings together eight governors from Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and the Republic of Niger, as well as various humanitarian organizations, to discuss and explore solutions for stabilizing the Lake Chad region.
