In Abuja, protesters carried signs with messages like ‘End Bad Governance’, ‘Enough is Enough’, ‘End Hunger’, and ‘Nigerians are Ready for New Naija’. Their demands include reducing food inflation, which was at 40.87% in June 2024, reversing electricity tariff hikes, and addressing ten other issues.
Deji Adeyanju, an activist lawyer, reported that the protests in Abuja have been peaceful thus far. Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga, echoed the sentiment that the protesters’ demands reflect the struggles of many Nigerians. He emphasized that the current economic hardships, including severe hunger, highlight the urgent need for government action.
NECA’s Mr. Adewale Oyerinde also stressed the importance of maintaining peaceful protests.
In contrast, no protests were reported in the southeastern states of Imo, Ebonyi, and Abia, according to Channels TV. DAILY POST noted a decrease in vehicular traffic across major Nigerian states.
The current protests echo the #EndSARS movement from October 2020, which started peacefully but ended with significant property damage and unrest.
