The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stated that it did not approve any increase in tariffs for telecommunications companies. This clarification was made by NCC Chief Executive Officer Aminu Maida on Saturday…….. CONTINUE READING
Maida addressed recent reports suggesting that the NCC had approved tariff hikes for major telecom operators such as MTN, GLO, Airtel, and 9 Mobile. He urged the public to disregard these claims.
“The NCC has not approved any new telecom tariff plans or increases,” Maida stated on his X handle. “The commission has instead directed all operators to simplify their existing tariff plans in a fair and transparent manner for consumers.”
Additionally, on Saturday, the NCC released new guidelines for telecom operators regarding add-ons and tariff plans. These guidelines require operators to:
– Develop and submit detailed plans to transition subscribers smoothly to new tariff plans, ensuring no loss in service quality or benefits.
– Provide comprehensive reports on all active tariff plans, bundles, promotions, and Quality of Service (QoS) metrics.
– Obtain prior approval from the NCC for all promotional elements, which must be offered as standalone products with clear terms and validity periods.
The guidelines also state that there are no limits to the number of add-ons a subscriber can choose, but operators must have mechanisms in place to inform subscribers about their current add-ons at the time of purchasing additional ones. Subscribers should also be able to check their number of add-ons via USSD or SMS.
