IPOB criticized the South-West authorities for dismissing the “IgboMustGo” campaign, labeling it as laughable and claiming that the Igbo people are firmly established and undeterred by such threats. They alleged that influential figures within Lagos State and the Federal Government might be behind the campaign.

IPOB’s Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, issued a statement saying, “In response to the proposed ‘IgboMustGo’ protest scheduled from August 20-30, 2024, by some unnamed Yoruba groups, IPOB reminds them that Ndigbo are prepared to exit Yoruba land and Nigeria via a referendum. We will not yield to any threats demanding our departure from any region in Nigeria.”

Powerful criticized Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his alleged hypocritical condemnation of the expulsion campaign, citing the governor’s previous actions against Igbo businesses and properties in Lagos. IPOB suspects that high-profile figures in the Lagos State and Federal Governments might be supporting the “IgboMustGo” movement.

IPOB emphasized that while they are prepared to leave Nigeria peacefully through a referendum, they warn that any forced or violent exit could lead to ongoing hostility. They urge the Yoruba groups to persuade President Tinubu to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and facilitate a referendum for the Igbo people.

The statement also highlighted IPOB’s avoidance of the current “EndBadGovernance” protests, noting that participation might have led to further attacks and accusations. They called on the international community to recognize the existential threat faced by the Igbo people and to support their quest for a referendum.

IPOB concluded by urging the Yoruba groups to direct their efforts toward advocating for a peaceful resolution rather than resorting to threats, asserting that the Igbo are ready to leave both Yoruba land and Nigeria.
