The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retd.), has announced that recent training for the agency’s Marine Command officers in diving techniques is expected to deter large cocaine shipments to Nigeria……… CONTINUE READING
Marwa made this statement while receiving a report from the Agency’s Director of Seaports Operations, Deputy Commander General of Narcotics, Omolade Faboyede. The update was shared by NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr. Femi Babafemi, on Tuesday in Abuja.
The new diving skills, Marwa explained, will send a clear message to international drug cartels that their shipments have no safe haven on vessels arriving in Nigeria.
The officers have completed training in basic diving, advanced open-water diving, and full-face mask diving. This training, supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), involved eight officers from four countries, including two from Nigeria. The certification program took place in Bombinhas City, Brazil, over two phases in November 2023 and July 2024.
The UNODC initiated this training to bolster the fight against drug trafficking and transnational crime across Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, and Senegal. The second phase specifically focused on enabling professionals to conduct ship hull searches and enforce laws related to public safety and drug trafficking.
Marwa praised the NDLEA officers for their excellent performance in the program. He noted that their new diving capabilities will significantly hinder global drug networks from attempting to smuggle large consignments into Nigeria.
“The enhanced ability to inspect ship hulls will deter drug traffickers, knowing that our officers can now search every corner of incoming vessels,” Marwa stated. He assured that the NDLEA would remain ahead of drug cartels through continuous skill upgrades and technological advancements to safeguard the country against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
